答:此题设计有误.
1.从逻辑上讲,left his parents 发生在went to college之前.主句这样表达更自然:
Jack left his parents and went to college last year.去年杰克离开父母上了大学.
2.逗号后面的是一个分词短语作状语,表示伴随情况,相当于一个并例的谓语:
A:and (he) determined not to return home until he achieve his goal.
B:and (he) was determined not to return home until he achieve his goal.
[until从句中的achieve 显然还存在语法问题,拼写错是楼主的问题,又少了个d或s!]
上面两个并列谓语都是成立的.前者为一动作,类例:
He determined to learn Greek.他决定学希腊语.
将之改为分词,则因主动而用现在分词,表示与主句同时发生的动作.
后者表示心态(状态),其中的determined已经形容词化了,没有了被动意义.译作:决心.
所以两个选项都是正确的.分译如下:
